Shaolin Monks do a similar drill with a longer bar.
Instead of holding it out in front they get into "Horse Riding Stance" (basically a wide, squat to parallel)while standing on top of two chairs and place the bar on their thighs.
Doing this allows them to work with much heavier weights.
